The Labour Party (LP) has announced the indefinite suspension of its Anambra State governorship primary election, which was initially scheduled to take place on Saturday, April 5, 2025.
This decision follows a landmark ruling by the Supreme Court on Friday afternoon, which led to the removal of the party’s national chairman, Julius Abure. The court directed that Abure and his executive members at all levels immediately vacate their positions and the party’s national secretariat.
Comrade Peter Okoye, the acting chairman of the Labour Party in Anambra State, confirmed the development during an interview with The Guardian in Awka. He emphasized that the planned governorship primary could no longer proceed under the current circumstances.
“In light of the Supreme Court’s judgment this afternoon, any primary election held by an executive not under Senator Nenadi Usman’s leadership will be deemed invalid,” Okoye said.
He explained that Senator Nenadi Usman has now been appointed to take over as the party’s national leader, along with her team, and will assume control of the national secretariat and all party structures across the country with immediate effect.
According to Okoye, a meeting of the acting Anambra State executive has been scheduled for Saturday to determine the next steps and communicate promptly with the new national leadership. He urged party members and supporters to remain calm and united during this transition period.
Despite the setback, Okoye reaffirmed that the Labour Party remains the fastest-growing political force in Nigeria, especially in Anambra State. He called on all members and stakeholders to stay alert and await further instructions from the party’s new leadership.
