Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has sparked fresh controversy after openly declaring that he would support the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections—even though he remains a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Wike made this bold statement during a public event held earlier this week. In his words: “I’m a PDP member, but my mission is to secure Rivers and the FCT for APC in 2027, and nobody will stop me.”
This unexpected declaration has sent shockwaves through Nigeria’s political scene and further deepened the internal crisis currently rocking the PDP. Many party members have criticized Wike’s comments, accusing him of working against the party’s interest while benefiting from its platform.
Wike, a former governor of Rivers State, was a key figure in the PDP for many years. However, since President Bola Tinubu of the APC appointed him as the FCT Minister in 2023, his loyalty to the PDP has been repeatedly questioned. His latest statement is seen as a clear signal that he may be preparing to officially align with the APC, even though he has not formally defected.
Reacting to the development, the Northern Minority Consultative Forum of the PDP has called for Wike and his allies to be sanctioned for anti-party activities. The group said his comments are a direct threat to the unity of the party and an insult to loyal members across the country. Many within the PDP now believe that Wike’s presence in the party is damaging its credibility, especially in the lead-up to the 2027 elections.
Political analysts say Wike’s statement could lead to major shifts in the 2027 elections, especially in Rivers State and the FCT, where he holds strong political influence. If Wike openly campaigns for the APC, it could split the PDP’s support base and weaken the opposition. His role in President Tinubu’s cabinet also adds more weight to his words, suggesting he may already be working behind the scenes to ensure an APC win.
So far, the national leadership of the PDP has not released an official statement addressing Wike’s remarks. However, insiders say there is growing pressure on the party to take action before the situation gets worse. As political tensions continue to rise, many Nigerians are watching closely to see whether Wike will finally defect to the APC or continue to ride both political waves.
