Abia Job Openings: Over 17,000 Applicants Compete for 2,000 Teaching Positions
The ongoing teacher recruitment drive in Abia State has received an overwhelming response, with over 17,000 applicants vying for just 2,000 positions in primary, secondary, and technical colleges.
Governor Alex Otti approved the recruitment exercise as part of his administration’s efforts to improve the state’s education sector. According to Commissioner for Information Okey Kanu, the online application portal, which opened on Wednesday, has been flooded with applications, with more still coming in.
Kanu assured that the recruitment process would be fair and transparent, with shortlisted candidates undergoing a Computer-Based Test (CBT) followed by oral interviews.
This initiative aligns with Governor Otti’s broader reforms in the education sector, which include:
✅ Extending teachers’ retirement age
✅ Approving special welfare packages for educators
✅ Introducing tuition-free education in public schools
In a separate update, Kanu addressed concerns over the ongoing pension crisis in Abia State, stating that the government has not deceived pensioners regarding the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Nigerian Union of Pensioners (NUP).
