Tension erupted at a mortuary located between Afoukwu and Abayi Okoroato village along the Aba-Ikot Ekpene highway in Obingwa, Abia State, as three mortuary attendants narrowly escaped lynching after a shocking discovery.
The chaos began when a family arrived to collect their deceased son’s body for burial, only to find that one of his testicles was missing. This sparked outrage among the family members and youths who had accompanied them.
Eyewitnesses described the situation as volatile, with enraged youths storming the mortuary, destroying properties, and attacking the attendants. The workers attempted to flee but were caught by the angry mob.
Local residents condemned the act, calling it an abomination in Igbo culture. Fearing similar violations, other families rushed to the facility to retrieve the remains of their loved ones.
Police officers from the Eastern Ngwa Division, Umuobiakwa, arrived at the scene to restore order and arrested some of the attendants who had been held by the mob.
