Abia State Launches 2025 Digital School Census, Warns Schools Against Non-Compliance

The Abia State government has officially kicked off its 2025 Digital School Census, targeting all public, private, military, paramilitary, and faith-based schools throughout the state. This initiative, designed to gather accurate data for better educational planning and decision-making, will run from Tuesday, May 20, 2025.

According to a statement from the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Goodluck Ubochi, school principals, head teachers, and proprietors are required to log into the National Education Management Information System (NEMIS) portal using their official school codes to submit their data between May 20 and May 30, 2025. The portal is accessible via smartphones, tablets, and computers to facilitate easy participation.

Schools that do not yet have a school code are advised to contact their Local Government Education Authority to obtain one free of charge. The government has stressed that participation is compulsory, warning that schools failing to comply may be classified as non-existent and face potential closure.

The statement also called on traditional rulers, local government chairmen, church leaders, and school-based management committees to enforce compliance, highlighting the census’s vital role in advancing the state’s education system through data-driven policy formulation.
