Senate President Akpabio Foresees Smooth Re-Election for Tinubu in 2027 at APC Summit
Senate President Godswill Akpabio has expressed confidence that President Bola Tinubu will secure an effortless re-election in 2027, unlike the intense contest he faced in the 2023 presidential poll. Speaking at the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Summit held on Thursday at the Presidential Villa’s Banquet Hall in Abuja, Akpabio, representing the National Assembly leadership, led a strong vote of confidence in Tinubu’s administration.
Akpabio declared, “If this president has performed well, who better than us in the National Assembly to say so? And if he had not, wouldn’t we be the ones to issue an impeachment notice? We are not issuing impeachment notices; rather, we are signaling that 2027 will be different from 2023. I foresee more states rallying to your side.” He also shared an anecdote about a Labour Party senator, who wished to remain unnamed, showing eagerness to join Tinubu’s camp — a sign of growing support.
As President Tinubu approaches two years in office on May 29, 2025, the 2023 election outcome remains a key reference. Tinubu won with 8,794,726 votes and carried 12 of Nigeria’s 36 states, defeating his closest rivals: Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with 6,984,520 votes and Peter Obi of the Labour Party with 6,101,533 votes. Obi’s campaign notably energized the youth vote in a significant way.
The summit also featured the Progressives Governors’ Forum, comprising APC governors, who passed a vote of confidence in Tinubu’s leadership, a motion endorsed by the party hierarchy. The event was attended by top officials including President Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje, and other prominent party members.
