In recent developments, TETFund scholars studying abroad from Abia State College of Education (Technical), Arochukwu, have faced a dire situation as their salaries were abruptly halted by the Provost. The decision has left many scholars in financial distress for over four months, hindering their academic pursuits and basic living expenses.
One of the affected scholars, Akpi Uchenna Kalu, currently studying at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, detailed the challenges in an open letter. Kalu expressed deep concern over the Provost’s refusal to pay salaries despite repeated appeals for clarification of their offense.
The combination of high foreign exchange rates and the prolonged non-payment of salaries has exacerbated the scholars’ financial difficulties, making it increasingly challenging to cover essential expenses such as accommodation.
In response to these circumstances, an urgent appeal has been directed to the Honorable Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly. The scholars implore intervention to advocate for the immediate reinstatement of their salaries and hold the Provost accountable for his actions under the TETFund scholarship scheme.

Urgent Appeal: Reinstatement of Salaries for TETFund Scholars Abroad by the Provost, Abia State college of education (Technical) Arochukwu
Dear Honorable Speaker,
Abia State House of Assembly,
I am writing to you as a concerned TETFund scholar currently studying abroad, deeply troubled by the unjust and inexplicable stoppage of our salaries by the Provost of Abia State College of Education (Technical), Arochukwu.
Despite being on study leave and fulfilling our obligations as scholars representing the college, we were shocked to discover that our salaries have been halted without any valid explanation or justification for more than 4 months now. This sudden and arbitrary action has thrown many of us into financial turmoil, jeopardizing our ability to continue our studies and meet our basic living expenses.
As scholars committed to academic excellence and the advancement of our state, we embarked on this journey with the understanding that our financial needs would be supported, particularly since we are on bond with the college. However, the refusal of the Provost to pay our salaries, despite our repeated appeals and attempts to seek clarification, has left us in a state of distress and uncertainty.
The high foreign exchange rates and the non-payment of our salaries have exacerbated our financial challenges, making it increasingly difficult for us to cover essential expenses such as accommodation, and daily necessities. This untenable situation not only undermines our academic pursuits but also threatens to derail our dreams and aspirations.
We have diligently fulfilled our obligations under the bond agreement with the college, and it is only fair and just that the Provost upholds his end of the agreement by ensuring the prompt payment of our salaries. Our financial stability is essential for us to continue our studies and fulfill our obligations as scholars and future leaders of Abia State.
Therefore, I implore you, as a representative of the people of Abia State, to intervene on our behalf and advocate for the immediate reinstatement of our salaries. The Provost must be held accountable for his actions and compelled to fulfill his obligations to us as scholars under the Tetfund scholarship scheme.
Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter. I trust in your leadership and advocacy on behalf of the scholars of Abia State College of Education (Technical) Arochukwu.
Sincerely,
Akpi Uchenna Kalu
