During a recent media briefing in Uyo, Tom FredFish, a senior member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Chairman of PDP Advocates for Peace and Justice (PAPAJ), called on the party to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to the South-South region, specifically endorsing the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barrister Nyesom Wike. FredFish argued that this move is crucial to avoid repeating the errors of the 2023 elections and to restore unity and peace within the party.
FredFish criticized the current PDP reconciliation committee as ineffective, questioning its purpose if it fails to address the zoning issue. He insisted that Wike remains the most credible and formidable candidate from the southern region capable of mounting a strong challenge against President Bola Tinubu. According to him, the party’s southern governors lack political strength, the PDP National Executive Committee is weakened, and the Board of Trustees remains inactive, leaving Wike as the party’s strongest asset, equipped with the financial resources, influence, and judicial reach to revitalize the PDP.
Describing Wike as the “soul” and “savior” of the party, FredFish urged the PDP to do everything necessary—even to the point of seeking Wike’s forgiveness—to ensure he contests the 2027 presidential election. He also emphasized that only Wike can prevent defections of key PDP members and governors.
Criticizing Senator Bukola Saraki’s reconciliation efforts, FredFish insisted that the party should immediately zone the presidential ticket to the South-South. He also pointed to Wike’s influence within the ruling APC, suggesting Wike could help reclaim members who defected to Tinubu’s camp.
At the same time, FredFish reproached Wike for what he called a duplicitous stance, accusing him of undermining the PDP by maintaining an alliance with President Tinubu. He challenged the party to grant Wike the presidential ticket and then watch if Wike would resign as FCT Minister to pursue his ambition, or continue serving Tinubu while weakening the PDP.
