A tragic accident on Wednesday in Umuahia, Abia State, claimed the lives of a father and his teenage daughter when their SUV collided with a stationary truck along the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway. The crash occurred at Amibo Ubakala, involving a light green Toyota Highlander and a Mack truck loaded with iron scrap.
Eyewitnesses said the Toyota Highlander, speeding from the Enugu direction, crashed into the parked truck. The impact instantly killed the driver and his daughter, while other family members in the vehicle sustained serious injuries.
Emergency teams from the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) quickly arrived, recovering the victims and transporting the injured to the Federal Medical Centre in Umuahia. The deceased were taken to a nearby mortuary.
The truck driver, identified as Gideon Effiong Udofia, has been detained by police as investigations into the crash begin.
FRSC Sector Commander in Abia, Mrs. Ngozi Ezeoma, confirmed the incident in a Thursday statement, noting that preliminary findings suggest speeding or driver fatigue may have contributed to the fatal accident.
