The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has strongly denied accusations that it is working in the interest of Nigeria’s northern region. Bolaji Abdullahi, the party’s spokesman, dismissed the allegations as baseless during his appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics show. Abdullahi criticized Dumebi Kachikwu, the former presidential candidate of the ADC, for making what he called “ridiculous” claims about the party’s alleged northern agenda.
“It’s ridiculous to say the least, and he [Dumebi Kachikwu] should be ashamed of himself,” Abdullahi, a former minister, said. He emphasized that the ADC is a national party, designed to represent all Nigerians, regardless of region, religion, or age. “ADC is a party, and we said this from day one, it’s neither a party of the North nor of the South. It’s neither a party of Muslims nor of Christians. It’s neither a party for old people,” Abdullahi added. “It’s a party that is deliberately designed to develop and build the kind of future that Nigeria desires.”
The accusations against the ADC came from Dumebi Kachikwu, who last month alleged that the party’s recent adoption by the opposition coalition for the 2027 election was a plot to return power to the northern region. In response, Abdullahi highlighted the diversity within the party, pointing to key members from the southern region, asserting that the ADC’s structure reflects a truly national spread.
Abdullahi also accused the government of attempting to sow divisions within the party, but assured that the ADC is aware of these tactics and is actively countering them.
In addition to Abdullahi’s comments, ADC chieftain Mani Ibrahim also weighed in, clarifying that Kachikwu no longer speaks for the party. “Dumebi Kachikwu is not a member of our party (ADC), he does not represent the party, and has no right to talk on behalf of the ADC,” Ibrahim stated, urging viewers to disregard Kachikwu’s remarks.
The exchange highlighted ongoing tensions within the opposition coalition and the ADC’s efforts to maintain its identity as a party for all Nigerians.
ADC is not a northern or southern party; it is a party designed to build a kind of future that Nigeria deserves.
