Abia Taskforce Restores Order in Aba, Earns Praise from Local Drivers

Aba, the commercial hub of Abia State, has witnessed a major enforcement action as the state government intensifies its crackdown on street trading. The Abia State Harmonized Taskforce has successfully cleared major roads, including Hospital Road, Asa Road, and St. Michael’s Road, removing illegal structures and street traders in compliance with the government’s directive.

The operation has received widespread approval from commercial motorists, including Mr. Boniface Okereke, Mr. Otu Madu, and Mr. Onyenaobi, who commended Governor Dr. Alex Otti for his efforts. They highlighted the dangers posed by street trading, such as traffic congestion and road accidents, which have long disrupted movement in the city.

However, not all stakeholders are in favor of the enforcement. Some displaced traders, such as Mrs. Chizoba Nwangwa and Madam Obioma, have appealed to the government to provide alternative trading spaces. They argue that street trading is their primary source of livelihood, and renting shops remains unaffordable due to the high cost of living.

The situation underscores the broader economic challenges many Nigerians face. While the government’s initiative to restore order and improve road safety in Aba is commendable, addressing the needs of affected traders through relocation plans or financial support will be crucial for long-term success.
