Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has made fresh claims regarding the 2023 presidential election, reigniting debate over the results. Despite President Bola Tinubu’s victory being upheld by the Supreme Court, Amaechi, now seeking the presidential ticket of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), reiterated claims by Peter Obi’s supporters that the Labour Party candidate won in Rivers State.
Speaking during an X Space discussion on Saturday, Amaechi said, “I can agree with you to some extent that Obi won Rivers State. But I don’t know how the results were changed.” This follows the official figures released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which showed Tinubu’s APC securing 231,591 votes in Rivers State, while Obi’s LP polled 175,071 votes, with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) trailing behind with 88,468 votes.
Amaechi also revealed his conditions for supporting the ADC’s presidential candidate, stressing the importance of transparency in the party’s primaries. “In a free and fair primary, whoever wins will have my full support. I will be deeply devoted to the campaign and will do everything I can to help ADC unseat this current clueless government,” he declared.
In his interview, Amaechi promised to focus on electoral reforms if he becomes president, stating, “Electoral reforms are the lowest hanging fruits for me. There will be electoral reforms in my first six months.”
Amaechi, along with Peter Obi and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, is vying for the ADC’s presidential ticket in the 2027 election, fueling speculation about the upcoming race.
