Former Minister of Transportation and ex-Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, has made a bold promise for Nigeria’s future if he becomes President in 2027. Speaking during an X Space session titled ‘Weekend Politics’, Amaechi vowed that within his first month in office, he would change the Nigerian constitution and eradicate corruption, threatening to resign if he fails to do so.
“If I become President, I will change the constitution from indigeneship to citizenship. If I do not end corruption in Nigeria within one month, I will tender my resignation,” Amaechi declared, emphasizing the urgency of addressing Nigeria’s pervasive corruption issue.
Amaechi, a former chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), also made a startling accusation, claiming that some influential individuals in the country visit the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to engage in financial misconduct. He expressed outrage at the behavior of the ruling elite and their apparent disregard for the country’s economic health.
Speaking further on Nigeria’s electoral system, Amaechi criticized Professor Yakubu Mahmood, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), calling him the worst INEC chairman in Nigeria’s history.
The former governor also challenged the current FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, to take a walk along the streets of Port Harcourt to observe the reality of public health and the people’s true sentiments.
Amaechi’s speech didn’t end without addressing the controversial removal of fuel subsidies. He reiterated that if elected President, he would not reverse the subsidy removal but would redirect the funds directly into the pockets of ordinary Nigerians, not the elites.
“I will not reverse the removal of subsidies. I will instead direct the funds into the pockets of Nigerians, not the elite,” he concluded, outlining a vision aimed at benefiting the general public rather than a select few.
Amaechi’s vows have ignited a renewed debate on corruption, electoral reform, and the future direction of Nigeria’s governance. His statements signal a commitment to sweeping change if he secures the presidency in 2027.
