The Director of the Agribusiness Incubation Centre at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Dr. Philips Nto, was among 255 proud parents who witnessed their children’s induction as medical doctors by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) over the weekend.
His son, Dr. Uchenna Okore Nto, was one of the graduating doctors from the College of Medicine, University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN)—an institution described by its Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ortyanya, represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Enugu Campus, as a beacon of excellence and the “premier indigenous university” in Nigeria.
During the induction ceremony held at the Enugu Campus of the university, dignitaries including representatives of the MDCN, the Vice Chancellor, and the Provost of the College of Medicine admonished the new doctors to uphold professionalism, integrity, and compassion in their medical practice.
The Registrar of the MDCN, Prof. Fatima Kyari, represented by Dr. Tijani, commended the University of Nigeria for maintaining its long-standing tradition of excellence in medical education. She urged the inductees to uphold the ethics of the profession, show respect and empathy to patients, and conduct themselves in ways that would bring honour to the medical community.
“The Council expects you to be ethical, humane, and professional in all you do. Avoid any act that could bring the profession into disrepute,” she advised.
In his remarks, the Vice Chancellor congratulated the Class of 2024, noting that their training had met the high standards for which the University of Nigeria is renowned. He encouraged them to continue to be worthy ambassadors of the institution in their future careers.
Expressing their joy, Dr. Philips and Dr. Chioma Nto, parents of Dr. Uchenna Nto, thanked God for guiding their son through the rigorous journey to becoming a qualified medical doctor.
Dr. Uchenna Okore Nto distinguished himself during his training as the Class Representative of the Class of 2024 and President of the University of Nigeria Medical Students’ Association (UNMSA).
The event marked another milestone in the University of Nigeria’s history of producing highly competent and ethical medical professionals who continue to make meaningful contributions to healthcare delivery both within and beyond Nigeria.
