Less than 24 hours after unveiling the Utako Farmers Market, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has stirred headlines once again with the commissioning of the first phase of the ultra-modern, solar-powered Kugbo International Market in Abuja.
This latest development is being seen by analysts as not just an economic masterstroke but also a bold political statement by Wike — a move that may signal deeper ambitions and growing influence within the Tinubu administration.
Officially opened on Saturday, the newly commissioned market is a major boost to Abuja’s commercial landscape. The first phase alone features 1,600 fully equipped shops, with the entire project expected to accommodate up to 5,200 stalls when completed. Other state-of-the-art facilities include 20 underground warehouses, 20 cold rooms, 10 restaurants, banking halls, a healthcare clinic, and dedicated fire and police service stations.
With projections of over 20,000 daily visitors, the market is poised to become one of the capital city’s most vibrant trade and business centers.
Representing Wike at the event, Minister of State for FCT, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, emphasized the project’s value beyond its infrastructure:
“This is more than a market — it’s a thriving economic ecosystem that will stimulate trade, improve internal revenue, and create thousands of jobs for residents across sectors.”
Wike’s efforts are aligned with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, reinforcing his reputation as a results-driven administrator focused on urban renewal and grassroots empowerment.
Ambassador Maureen Tamuno, GMD of Abuja Investment Company Limited (AICL), also praised Wike’s relentless push for urban development, saying the minister’s vision and leadership have redefined Abuja’s investment landscape.
A major highlight of the event was the allocation of 120 rent-free shops to grassroots traders — 20 each to the six FCT area councils — in a move aimed at boosting local entrepreneurship and economic inclusion.
The commissioning drew high-profile dignitaries, including former Speaker Yakubu Dogara, former Minister of Information Prof. Jerry Gana, Senator Anthony Yaro, Senator Binta Masi Garba, Prof. Suleiman Bogoro, and FCT Head of Service Grace Adayilo. They all commended the initiative as a catalyst for inclusive economic growth and a strong signal that Abuja is becoming a beacon for sustainable urban investment.
