Abia State Government to Convert Cow Dung to Biogas at Lokpanta Cattle Market
The Abia State Government has unveiled plans to convert cow dung generated at the Lokpanta Regional Cattle Market in Umunneochi Local Government Area into biogas. This innovative initiative is aimed at providing a safer, environmentally friendly alternative for roasting cow legs, heads, and hides—ultimately phasing out the hazardous use of tires for the process.
Mr. Peter Ekekwe, Deputy General Manager of the Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA) for Abia North, disclosed this during an inspection of the market’s sanitary conditions and compliance with state directives. According to Ekekwe, consultations with technical experts are at an advanced stage, and the biogas project is expected to commence within the next month. “Our goal is to eliminate the use of tires in animal roasting. We are currently engaging experts on the biogas conversion process,” he stated.
Ekekwe, however, expressed concern over the poor hygiene observed at the newly constructed abattoir, describing the conditions as unsatisfactory. He issued a stern directive to butchers and traders to prioritize cleanliness, warning that the government would no longer condone unhygienic practices. “The sanitary state, particularly at the abattoir, is disappointing. There is significant room for improvement,” he remarked.
To further enforce order, Ekekwe gave a one-week ultimatum to traders operating outside the fenced perimeter of the market to relocate within the designated area or risk demolition of their structures. He emphasized that prior warnings had been disregarded, stating, “By next week, any shops or goat stalls situated outside the market fence will be removed.”
He explained that the perimeter fencing was implemented to enhance security, control access, and improve the overall appearance of the market.
In response, Alhaji Abdullahi Abdullmidu, Vice Chairman of the Lokpanta Cattle Market, commended the state government for its developmental efforts. He reassured officials of the traders’ willingness to comply with all directives. Abdullmidu acknowledged that initial concerns over possible eviction had been addressed, noting that the fencing project has significantly improved security in the area. “We now understand that the government has our best interests at heart. We fully support their efforts and will continue to cooperate,” he said.
He also praised Governor Alex Otti for his visionary leadership and the improved security situation along the Enugu–Port Harcourt expressway.
Mr. Ekekwe concluded by appreciating Governor Otti’s continued support and encouraged traders to align with the state government’s policies to maintain a cleaner, safer, and more orderly market environment.
