Primary and secondary school students across the nation are being encouraged to cultivate an interest in agricultural practices as a means of securing their future and addressing the prevailing food insecurity in Nigeria.

Dr. Philips Nto, Director of the Agribusiness Incubation Centre at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, issued this call during a visit by students from Topfaith International Schools, Akwa Ibom State. Dr. Nto, who personally led the students on a tour of the facility, highlighted the extensive value chain and numerous benefits inherent in the agricultural sector.

He emphasized the lucrativeness of agriculture and assured the students that with mechanized farming, the traditional challenges associated with food production would be overcome. Dr. Nto underscored agriculture as a reliable means of countering recent food insecurity trends, urging the students to embrace it and contribute to making it more appealing.

The students, in their responses, expressed satisfaction with the insights gained from the visit and pledged to adopt agriculture as a viable path. Mr. James Ishado, a teacher from Topfaith International Schools, commended the University for providing such enlightening experiences and praised the school for facilitating the students’ visit to the facility.

The event was graced by the presence of Prof. Maria Njoku, Dean of the College of Agricultural Economics, Rural Sociology, and Extension, alongside other university staff and representatives from Topfaith International Schools.
