Nigeria is in mourning following the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away in London on Sunday, July 13, 2025, after a prolonged illness.

In swift response, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to travel immediately to the United Kingdom to accompany Buhari’s remains back home.

The State House, in an official statement, expressed President Tinubu’s deep sorrow over the loss, extending heartfelt condolences to Mrs. Aishat Buhari and the entire Buhari family.

Describing Buhari’s death as “a national loss,” Tinubu praised the former leader’s legacy, highlighting his pivotal role in shaping Nigeria’s democratic and military history. “Nigeria mourns a patriot who dedicated his life to the service of the nation,” Tinubu stated.

In honour of Buhari’s memory, Tinubu has also ordered that all national flags be flown at half-mast across the country as a symbol of respect.

Buhari, a towering figure in Nigeria’s political landscape, served as the country’s democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023 and as military head of state from 1984 to 1985. His leadership — both in uniform and in civilian life — left an indelible mark on the nation.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced in the coming days as the country prepares to bid farewell to one of its most influential leaders.
