BREAKING: Mass Defection Rocks YPP in Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency as Ward Members, Chieftains Begin Exodu
A political earthquake is shaking the Young Progressives Party (YPP) structure in the Arochukwu/Ohafia federal constituency as resignation letters from ward members and party chieftains have begun flooding social media this morning, signaling what analysts are describing as a coordinated mass defection from the party.
The crisis, which has been building in recent days, appears to have been triggered by unconfirmed but widely circulated reports that two of the party’s most prominent figures in the constituency — Dr. Oge Okpan, the YPP House of Assembly candidate for Ohafia North, and Dr. Stephen Ukpai, the party’s House of Representatives candidate for the Arochukwu/Ohafia federal constituency in the 2023 general election — are set to resign their membership from the party.
In what appears to be a domino effect, rank-and-file members and ward-level leaders have taken to Facebook this morning to publicly post their own resignation letters, tagging Dr. Stephen Ukpai Ukwa directly — a move that strongly suggests they are following his lead out of the party.
Four resignation letters obtained by Arochukwu Blog reveal the following departures, all addressed to their respective ward chairmen and all citing immediate effect:
Israel Ejieke Kalu, writing to the Chairman of Ovukwu Ward, formally resigned his YPP membership effective immediately, expressing appreciation for opportunities received during his time in the party.
Kalu Samuel Chinecherem, also writing to the Chairman of Ovukwu Ward, submitted a similar resignation, tendering his membership withdrawal with immediate effect.
Chibuoñu Awa addressed his resignation letter to the Chairman of Ohaeke Ward, Arochukwu LGA, formally withdrawing his YPP membership with immediate effect.
Ifiora Chukwubuikem Kingsley equally wrote to the Chairman of Ohaeke Ward, Arochukwu LG, tendering his resignation from the Young Progressives Party effective immediately.
All four letters followed an identical format, a detail that strongly suggests the resignations are coordinated and part of a larger, organized movement out of the party rather than isolated personal decisions.
The resignations, posted across Facebook within hours of each other early this morning, have sent shockwaves through YPP’s grassroots structure in the constituency. Sources within the party have not yet issued any official response or damage-control statement as of the time of filing this report.
It remains to be seen whether Dr. Oge Okpan and Dr. Stephen Ukpai will formally confirm their own departures, and crucially, which party the defecting members intend to join. The destination party, if revealed, will offer the clearest indication of where the political weight of this exodus is heading ahead of future electoral contests in Arochukwu/Ohafia.
Arochukwu Blog will continue to monitor developments and bring you updates as the story unfolds.
