Former Deputy Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Uchendu, has taken to social media to reflect on the peace of mind he says he currently enjoys, having stepped back from active contest ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a post shared via Facebook while at Oxford Street, Westminster, London, Uchendu wrote: “Is this what you guys enjoy when you’re not contesting an election? Peace of mind! Thank God I’m resting during this period, but in 2031, I’ll sacrifice that peace for us.”
The post was accompanied by a photo of him standing beside a car along a UK roadway, and quickly drew reactions and comments from followers within hours of being shared.
Arochukwu Blog gathered that Uchendu is a familiar name in Arochukwu/Ohafia politics. He represented Ohafia South State Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, first elected in 2015 on the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), before defecting to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2019 election, which he also won. Following the inauguration of the 7th Assembly, he was elected Deputy Speaker, a position he held from 2019 to 2023.
During his time in the Assembly, Uchendu earned the nickname “Mr Project” among constituents, owing to the numerous infrastructural and community projects credited to him across Ohafia South and beyond. He has on several occasions stated that some of these projects were executed with his personal resources, a claim he has consistently maintained reflects his commitment to ensuring the dividends of leadership reach the people, regardless of what the official constituency allocation provided.
Ahead of the 2023 general election, Uchendu contested for the Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency seat in the House of Representatives on the PDP platform but lost to Ibe Osonwa of the Labour Party, who polled 8,946 votes to clinch the seat. Following that loss, Uchendu defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and contested the party’s primary election for the same seat in May 2026, losing to Chief Ikenna Nicolas Ukwa, who has since emerged as APC’s flagbearer for the constituency ahead of the 2027 general elections.
With his latest comments suggesting he does not intend to contest in 2027, but is instead positioning himself for 2031, the post has continued to generate conversation among residents and political watchers in Arochukwu and Ohafia. While some have linked his current stance to his two recent attempts to return to elective politics, others note that his track record of grassroots projects means his political relevance in the constituency is far from over, regardless of the seat he currently holds.
As the countdown to the 2027 general elections continues, attention in the constituency remains largely on the candidates already in the race, including the APC’s Ikenna Nicolas Ukwa and NDC’s Ifeanyi Elvis Ogbonna (Ignes), while Uchendu’s comments have added a fresh talking point to the political conversation around who truly speaks for Arochukwu/Ohafia ahead of the polls.
