Dr. Chibuzo Okereke, Labour Party presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections and a distinguished son of Arochukwu Kingdom, on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, joined other presidential candidates and key national stakeholders in signing the first National Peace Accord ahead of the polls.
The ceremony, organised by the National Peace Committee (NPC) under the leadership of former Head of State Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, GCFR, took place in Abuja. It was attended by the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Inspector-General of Police, the European Union Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, NPC Convener Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, political party leaders including Labour Party National Chairman Distinguished Senator Nenadi Usman, PhD, and other presidential candidates.
In a statement issued after the event, Okereke said he signed the Accord “not merely with my hand, but with my heart and with pride, as an act of patriotism to the country I love.”
He stressed that peace remains critical to the sustenance of Nigeria’s democracy and called on every political actor, candidate and party to commit sincerely to the spirit and provisions of the agreement. “We cannot tear down our country during campaigns and expect to govern in peace, unity, and harmony afterward. We must all become champions of peacebuilding,” he stated.
Okereke warned that Nigeria already faces enormous challenges and cannot afford to compound them through hate-filled rhetoric and inflammatory campaigns. “The 2027 elections will come and go, but Nigeria will remain,” he said. He urged political discourse to focus on practical solutions to youth unemployment, creation of opportunities and sustainable livelihoods, poverty reduction, wealth creation, an innovative energy mix using cutting-edge technology to deliver constant electricity, improvements in health and education, and the general sustainable development of the country.
These, he argued, are the issues worthy of debate — to be contested through ideas, competence, character, compassion and a genuine commitment to national progress, rather than violence, division or hate speech.
The Labour Party flagbearer reaffirmed his campaign vision anchored on “Nigerians First.” He declared that for too long the country has been governed for everything and everyone except the people themselves, and that it is time to build a government that places Nigerians at the centre, delivering equal opportunity, social justice, dignity and tangible benefits.
Okereke pointed to Abia State under Governor Alex Otti, OFR, as a proven template of good governance, purposeful leadership and strategic infrastructural development that has transformed lives and improved the well-being of citizens. “This must be our template, a model of governance that delivers results, restores hope, creates opportunities, and puts the welfare of the people at the heart of government,” he said.
He commended the National Peace Committee for providing an important moral compass for the political system and expressed hope that the Peace Accord would drive a new commitment by all political actors to issue-based campaigns, peaceful elections and the preservation of national unity.
“Nigeria belongs to all of us. We may contest against one another, but we must never become enemies of our country. Let us compete peacefully. Let us debate ideas. Let us build Nigeria together,” Okereke concluded.
The signing comes as campaigns for the 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections formally commence. Okereke, who holds the traditional title of Ikemba-Aro, continues to draw strong support from Arochukwu sons and daughters at home and in the diaspora as he advances his “Nigerians First! Believe Again!” agenda.
God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
