Hon. Uchenna Okoro Kalu, member representing Arochukwu State Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, has announced an update on the restoration of electricity to Abam, days after facing intense criticism online over the community’s prolonged blackout.

Five days ago, a public commentator, Dms Emeka Baron, had posted a pointed challenge directed at the lawmaker, questioning what he had done for his people in Abam Onyerubi. The post read, “ABAM ONYERUBI IS ASKING: HON. UCHENNA OKORO KALU, WHAT HAVE YOU DONE FOR YOUR PEOPLE? Abam Onyerubi is bleeding in darkness. For over 10 years, a whole clan that has produced professors, business moguls, and great sons and daughters has been thrown into total blackout. Our mothers cannot preserve their goods, our youths cannot learn any meaningful handwork that needs light, our small businesses have collapsed.”

The post continued, “And in the midst of this darkness, we have our own son, Hon. Okoro Uchenna Kalu in power for almost 4 years now. This is not an attack, this is a honest question from his people. As a true son of Abam, what have you done to restore light in Abam Onyerubi? How many motions have you moved on the floor concerning Abam Onyerubi electricity? How many times have you met with the power authorities to bring back our light? What project, what intervention, what effort can you point at in 4 years?”

Baron added, “Leadership is not about title, it is about impact. Your people gave you their trust because they believed a true son will feel their pain more than a stranger. But today, the pain is still there. The darkness is still there.” He closed by writing, “Abam Onyerubi is not asking for too much. We are only asking for light. We are asking for a voice that will speak for us when it matters. If after 4 years as a true son in power, there is nothing to show for Abam Onyerubi, then it is time for sober reflection.” The post drew 48 reactions and 100 comments.

Days later, Hon. Uchenna Okoro Kalu shared an update addressing the electricity situation in Abam. In the post, he wrote, “UPDATE ON THE RESTORATION OF POWER (ELECTRICITY) IN ABAM. For many years now our people have been in total darkness due to lack of electricity supply. It became a burden to us on assumption in Office. Since then we have been exploring ways and means by which this issue/challenge could be resolved without necessarily bringing that to the public notice.”

He continued, “We were delighted and relieved at the same time when the matter was presented to our action-full-packed Governor, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, who assured us that the State Government under his watch will restore power to Abam alongside Ohafia. Today we are delighted to inform that the Ministry of Power and Public Utilities, Abia State has entered the Phase 2 of the Power Restoration to Abam.”

According to the post, this phase covers the rehabilitation of transformer substations at Ndi Oji, Ndi Okorie, Ndi Ememe and Atan Abam in Arochukwu LGA, and is expected to be completed soon to enable residents of Abam to enjoy electricity once more.

He added, “Our commitment towards looking out for our Constituents has never changed. We aim to bring even more developments to Arochukwu State Constituency with the continues support of our people. Kudos to our Dear Governor, Ekwueme Ndi Abam for his pragmatic disposition and for being intentional in the delivery of dividends of democracy to the people of Abia State. We Will Do More!”

Arochukwu Blog gathered that this update was accompanied by a video and drew 67 reactions, 30 comments and 9 shares.

Hon. Uchenna Okoro Kalu has represented Arochukwu State Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly since 2023 and is currently seeking re-election ahead of the 2027 general election.
