A post circulating in honour of Sen. Mao Arukwe Ohuabunwa, PhD, has drawn attention back to his developmental strides across Abia North Senatorial District during his tenure at the National Assembly.
Ohuabunwa represented Abia North in the Senate between 2015 and 2019, having earlier represented Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives between 1999 and 2007.
The post described him as having left a mark through, in its words, “strategic wealth creation projects and provision of jobs for the people of Abia North Senatorial District,” alongside “meaningful peace building platforms aimed at political and social harmony,” and “agricultural reforms and accelerated industrialization.” It further credited him with “relevant health and education policies” and a “transformed environment through urban renewal.”
Arochukwu Blog gathered that a number of specific projects were listed in connection with his tenure, spanning Arochukwu, Ohafia and Bende local government areas. Within Arochukwu, these include the construction of a 5-classroom block at Ututu, an ongoing primary healthcare center at Ugwuakuma, a borehole at Ugwuakuma, renovation of Ugwuakuma Central School, reconstruction of Arochukwu township roads, a primary healthcare center at Uburu-Ihie in Ihechiowa, the Omenuko Bridge at Ozu Abam, a modern convenience center at the Civic Center in Arochukwu, a borehole at Amaeke, Ututu, and boreholes at Slaughter, Church of Christ and Ahiankwo, all in Obinkita, Arochukwu, alongside the Arochukwu water scheme project.
In Bende Local Government Area, the projects listed include the construction of Amaediaba Nkpa Ukwa and Agbaiyi internal roads in Nkpa, construction and renovation of a primary healthcare center in Igbere, a primary healthcare center at Lodu, Imenyi, rural electrification at Okoko Item, and a 5-classroom block at Akanu Item.
Ohuabunwa contested for re-election to the Senate in 2023 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party but was unsuccessful, with incumbent Senator Orji Uzor Kalu of the All Progressives Congress declared winner of the Abia North seat.
