The Abia State Government has announced plans to convert the newly commissioned Government House into a five-star hotel, citing serious structural flaws and security concerns. The building, which was inaugurated just a day before the previous administration left office, has been declared unfit for use by the current governor, Dr. Alex Otti.
During a media briefing at the site, the Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, described the structure as substandard and poorly located. He explained that the building’s position within a densely populated residential neighborhood poses serious security threats, as surrounding houses overlook the premises, compromising its safety.
Kanu further disclosed that only the first floor of the building was completed and furnished, while the remaining floors are unfinished and structurally defective. He also pointed out the absence of essential amenities, such as a working elevator, and noted that despite the enormous funds spent, the overall state of the facility makes it unsuitable for official use.
In response to criticism from former Commissioner for Information, John Okiyi Kalu—who accused Governor Otti’s administration of pushing a propaganda narrative—Kanu stood by the government’s findings. He emphasized that the decision to repurpose the building is grounded in evidence and public interest, urging citizens to ignore claims that the Government House was fully completed.
