Labour Party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 general election, Mazi Chibuzo Sunday Okereke, has made a bold promise to his Arochukwu people, declaring that he will return home as President of Nigeria to celebrate the Ikeji Yam Festival with them next year.
Okereke made the declaration while addressing the gathering at the Ikeji Yam Festival in Arochukwu, held on Friday, 25th September 2026, days after a solidarity roadshow and convergence was held in the community in support of Governor Alex Otti’s re-election bid and other Labour Party candidates ahead of the 2027 general election.
Speaking at the event, Okereke said, “Aro, my people, my people, women, ndi ori ihe, thank you. I thank His Eminence and the members of his council. I, Mazi Chibuzo Sunday Okereke, Ikemba of Arochukwu Kingdom, am very happy because formerly during Ikeji, it was just a small portion of land where we mounted our canopies to hold our Ikeji.”
He continued, “But with the leadership of His Eminence and the Nzuko Aro, both the men’s and women’s wings, we now represent a new chapter and a golden age. And the leadership of Governor Alex Otti in Abia State also represents a new chapter and a golden age.”
Okereke went on to speak about his emergence as the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, describing it as a blessing on Arochukwu. “To the glory of God, God has blessed Arochukwu and made it possible that I will be the one to go and represent the Labour Party as their presidential candidate at Aso Rock in Abuja,” he said.
He then made the striking promise that has since drawn attention within the community, stating, “By the grace of God, Arochukwu in Abia State will produce the next President of Nigeria, and by the next Ikeji Yam Festival, the President of Nigeria will be home to join his people in the New Yam celebration.”
Arochukwu Blog gathered that Okereke was accompanied at the event by Labour Party’s candidates for the 2027 general election, including Hon. Ibe Okwara Osonwa, representing Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency, and Hon. Uchenna Okoro Kalu, representing Arochukwu State Constituency, who both stood alongside him at the podium.
Days earlier, Arochukwu had hosted a welcome roadshow and solidarity convergence in honour of Okereke and in support of Governor Otti’s re-election bid, with the roadshow commencing at Amuvi and proceeding to the Civic Centre, Oror, Arochukwu, where the convergence was held. Okereke is one of 18 presidential candidates confirmed on the Independent National Electoral Commission’s final list for the January 2027 presidential election.
