Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has laid the foundation for the construction of the Nsukka International Market, which will feature a capacity of 5,000 shops. The development is part of his administration’s commitment to fostering economic growth and improving the livelihood of the people in Nsukka and Enugu North Zone.
At the groundbreaking ceremony held on Saturday, Governor Mbah emphasized the inclusive approach his government has adopted for its development projects. Addressing concerns about the relocation of traders from the former Ogige Market, he reassured the public that those affected would be given priority in the new market. “This is beyond just a groundbreaking for me. The project has stirred emotions, and sometimes, even misleading narratives. Our intentions are focused on public good, and this development will benefit all,” he stated.
Governor Mbah explained that the Nsukka International Market is an essential part of the state’s broader development plan, which includes the construction of modern transport terminals across Enugu. He pointed out that other areas, such as Ogbete Holy Ghost, Abakpa Nike, and Gariki, had similar developments, which required moving shop owners to facilitate the construction of these vital infrastructures. “We cannot speak of development and focus on just one part of the state. Nsukka deserves its own world-class terminal, and this market is a one-stop shop for everything,” Mbah added.
The Governor reassured traders from Ogige Market that they would be given the first opportunity to return to the new 5,000-shop market once construction is completed. He targeted the end of 2025 for the market’s completion and promised that the government would ensure the swift relocation of traders with minimal disruption.
Council Chairman of Nsukka Local Government, Engr. Jude Asogwa, expressed immense joy over the project, calling it a significant boost to the local economy. “This market and other projects under your administration are a blessing for Nsukka and Enugu North. We are witnessing development like never before,” he said.
Other dignitaries, including Hon. Chidi Mark Obetta, representing Nsukka/Igbo Eze South Federal Constituency, and Hon. Malachy Onyechi, representing Nsukka West State Constituency, lauded Governor Mbah for his consistent efforts to transform the region. They also expressed their commitment to ensuring the success of the administration’s initiatives.
The Governor’s visit to Nsukka also included a tour of other ongoing development projects, including the world-class transport terminal and the recently completed oxygen production plant at the state’s General Hospital in Nsukka. These initiatives have been made possible through the support of the federal government and the Governor’s vision for improving healthcare and infrastructure in the state.
In a final show of support, the Enugu North Zonal Woman Leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mrs. Ngozi Ezeja, thanked Governor Mbah for his leadership and efforts to empower women and the youth in the zone, reinforcing the message of unity and growth.
As Governor Mbah’s administration continues to push for widespread infrastructural and economic transformation, the 5,000-shop Nsukka International Market stands as a testament to the Governor’s commitment to bringing development to all corners of Enugu State.
