Arochukwu residents on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, turned out in large numbers to welcome Hon. Ifeanyi Elvis Ogbonna, popularly known as Ignes, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency, following his official unveiling at the party’s Abia State candidates’ showcasing event held at Britarch Events Centre in Umuahia.

Supporters had gathered early at Isinkpu Junction, a major entry point into the town, ahead of his arrival. As his convoy approached, the crowd erupted in cheers, songs and dancing, escorting him all the way to his residence in Ugwuavo, where the reception continued late into the night.

Addressing the gathering at his residence, Ignes expressed gratitude for the warm reception and reaffirmed his readiness to serve the people of the constituency. He pledged to prioritise legislation and projects that would improve the lives of constituents, with particular focus on infrastructure, education, human capital development, empowerment and agriculture. He noted that these were areas he had already been supporting long before declaring interest in elective office.

Ignes stated that his unveiling in Umuahia had shifted the political conversation in the constituency from the question of “who should be sent to Abuja” to support for a candidate who had demonstrated commitment over the years. He recalled that he had been known across Arochukwu and Ohafia for providing scholarships to students at primary, secondary and tertiary levels, empowering youths and women, organising the first female football competition in Arochukwu, supporting cultural dance groups, and distributing aprons and stipends to market women to boost their businesses — all before entering the political race.

Arochukwu Blog, while interviewing some of the participants at the event, spoke with residents who explained their reasons for supporting the candidate.

Joseph Okereke from Amasu said previous representatives had failed to deliver meaningful development. “We have sent people to Abuja before and nothing changed for us. No good roads, no jobs for our youths, our hospitals are still suffering. This time we want somebody who has already shown us who he is before asking for our vote,” he said.

Amadi Kalu, who travelled from Ohafia, pointed to the size of the crowd as evidence of genuine support. “You saw it yourself, nobody forced anybody to come out. People just love him because of what he has been doing for us quietly, no noise, no cameras, just helping people,” he said.

Mrs. Nneoma Okoroafor from Obinkita shared a personal experience. “As a market woman, I collected apron and stipend from one of his programmes before he even talked about contesting for anything. That is the kind of person we want representing us,” she said.

Mr. Ochiabutor from Ugwuakuma expressed confidence in the candidate’s background. “Ignes has not held any political office before, and that is exactly why we trust him. He built his name through service to the people, not through politics. We believe he will do better than those before him,” he said.

Mrs. Helen Okeke from Ụtụtụ linked the local support to wider political sentiments. “Everybody is talking about NDC now, that is the way to go. We are also praying that Peter Obi will come and rescue this country from all the suffering we have passed through. Arochukwu/Ohafia will vote for Ignes and for NDC,” she said.

Nnadozie Victor, a correspondent of Arochukwu Blog, reported that the large turnout from Isinkpu Junction to Ugwuavo reflected a growing belief among residents that years of poor representation in the constituency could finally change. Many of those present tied their hopes for local development to the broader prospects of the NDC and its presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

As the night progressed, groups of supporters remained under canopies at the residence discussing the day’s events, with several describing the reception as a clear signal of readiness for the 2027 elections.
