The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has dismissed widespread social media claims about the introduction of ₦5,000 and ₦10,000 banknotes, calling it false information. The viral posts, which included doctored images of the alleged new denominations featuring Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe and Chief Obafemi Awolowo, falsely claimed that the notes would be in circulation from May 1, 2025.
In an official statement shared on its verified Facebook page, the CBN clarified that the reports did not originate from the bank. It urged the public to disregard such misinformation and instead rely on its official website, www.cbn.gov.ng, for accurate financial updates.
The apex bank also cautioned against spreading false information about monetary policies, emphasizing that any major decisions, including the introduction of new currency notes, would be officially communicated through its verified platforms. Nigerians were advised to verify financial news from credible sources before sharing to prevent the spread of misleading information.
