The Abia State Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, while addressing journalists on the outcome of this week’s Executive Council meeting, highlighted several ongoing road projects in the state. He mentioned that these include the repair works on the 19.5km Umuahia-Bende Road (phases 1 and 2) and the maintenance of the 1.76km stretch from Igbere Junction to Onu Roundabout.
Additionally, he noted the reconstruction of the 2.5km Umuokogbuo Road, the rehabilitation of the 8.3km Isieketa-Obikabia Road in Isialangwa South LGA, and the Obehie-Ezendioma Road in Ukwa West LGA. According to him, Governor Alex Otti is set to launch the full reconstruction of the Umuahia-Bende Road in the coming months, following expert recommendations.
Prince Kanu also provided updates on the Umuahia Urban Renewal Project, emphasizing that efforts to modernize the capital city are progressing steadily. He stated that the reconstruction and expansion of Library Avenue, Akanu Ibiam, and the FMC Junction would soon be completed and commissioned. Other infrastructural projects, such as the new bus terminal and strategically located bus shelters, are also advancing and expected to be finished soon.
The Commissioner further reminded commercial vehicle operators that the ongoing registration exercise remains in effect and urged those yet to comply to do so, as the government will soon begin strict enforcement of the policy.
Addressing security concerns, he announced the recent release of a prominent businessman who was kidnapped in Ukwa weeks ago. He urged Abians, particularly Traditional Rulers and Town Union leaders, to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious activities to security agencies. He warned that the government, through its security forces, would closely monitor traditional rulers to identify those harboring criminals within their communities. Any traditional leader found guilty of such offenses would face serious consequences.
Present at the briefing were the General Manager of the Umuahia Capital Development Authority (UCDA), Mr. Kingsley Agomoh; the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Mr. Ferdinand Ekeoma; and the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Ukoha Njoku Ukoha.
