Vice President Kashim Shettima has departed Abuja for Dakar, Senegal, where he will represent President Bola Tinubu at the country’s 65th Independence Day celebrations.
Shettima, who left on Thursday afternoon, is expected to return to Nigeria on Friday.
Senegal marks its Independence Day on April 4 each year, commemorating its liberation from French colonial rule in 1960. The day is observed with national pride through various ceremonies, parades, and cultural events, as explained by the Vice President’s spokesperson, Stanley Nkwocha, in a statement.
The Vice President’s participation in the event follows an invitation extended to President Tinubu by Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, highlighting the strong bilateral ties between Nigeria and Senegal.
The celebrations will be held at the Place de la Nation in Dakar, where President Faye will host Vice President Shettima and other distinguished guests from across Africa and beyond.
Shettima’s trip comes less than a day after President Tinubu’s departure for a short working visit to Paris, as described by Bayo Onanuga, the president’s special adviser on information and strategy. During this visit, Tinubu is expected to review his administration’s progress.
